"RtI a Pathway to Enhanced Collaboration for Leadership"
Speaker: Mary Ruth Coleman, Senior Scientist for the FPG Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

This session will discuss leadership for building a framework for collaborative practice within RtI approaches.  This interactive workshop will examine the changing roles of exceptional educators as leaders and collaborators within professional learning communities.  Participants will engage in a process of guided reflections on leadership for an integrated, collaborative approach within a tiered framework and will gain the knowledge necessary to empower others to better instruct special needs students within today's schools.  Because, today, more than ever, exceptional educators are being called on to find solutions for struggling students.  Let's hear the call, rise to the challenge, and lead the way.

Biography:

Mary Ruth ColemanMary Ruth Coleman, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at the FPG Child Development Institute, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She directs Project U-STAR~PLUS (Using Science, Talents and Abilities to Recognize Students – Promoting Learning in Underrepresented Students). Her projects have included: ACCESS (Achievement in Content and Curriculum for Every Student’s Success, a National Significance Project funded by OSEP and applications of RtI for young children through the Recognition & Response Project sponsored by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation. Dr. Coleman has numerous publications including the 13th Edition of the seminal textbook, “Educating Exceptional Children” by Samuel A. Kirk, James J. Gallagher, Mary Ruth Coleman, and Nicholas J. Anastasiow (2010). She has served three terms (9 years) on the Board of Directors for the Association for Gifted (TAG), one of which she was President; three terms (9 years) on the Board of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC); and two terms (6 years) on the Board of Directors for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). She was president of the CEC in 2007.

"Using iWebfolio to Accelerate the Adoption of ePortfolios in Teacher Education"

Most educators view portfolios as an indispensable component of Teacher Education, however resistance from faculty and students often occurs when evaluating or implementing an electronic portfolio program. Nuventive’s solution, iWebfolio, provides unique support for adoption, assessment and review of e-portfolios. Learners easily compile evidence of self-assessment and reflection while managing how their portfolio is shared among peers, educators and potential employers. Scott JohnsonScott Johnson is vice president of the commercial operations of Nuventive and leverages over 20 years in the software industry bringing extensive global operations, sales, marketing and consulting experience to Nuventive’s leadership team. Johnson leads Nuventive’s market and growth strategies and has worked closely with Nuventive’s customers in Europe, Australia and throughout North America. Johnson is a regular speaker on using technology in assessment and has presented at conferences in Australia, France, UK and Dubai as well as North America. Johnson’s prior industry experience includes managing international operations in addition to starting, building and expanding business units in North America, Europe, and Latin America.

"Burger Flipping or Brain Surgery? Career Indecision and Today’s College Student"

Many students are clueless when it comes to career selection and college majors. Even those who have “declared” a major and career choice often cannot tell you how the career fits their personality, interests, or values or even describe the duties they would perform on a typical day. Students who are undecided are more likely to drop out. Come learn practical activities to help students clarify career goals and research their career options.

Biography:

Barbara EckenfelsBarbara Eckenfels is a Faculty Counselor at Lone Star College-Montgomery and teaches Learning Strategies, a student success course. Along with counseling students who are undecided about their career paths, she helps coordinate a Math Coaching Program for at-risk developmental math students. Before coming to Lone Star, she taught student success classes at Houston Community College and held a counseling position at San Jacinto College-South. She has a passion for counseling students who are undecided about their careers as they are at a higher risk for dropping out.

Teachers in today’s classrooms face a range of student’s academic and social needs. Differentiating instruction can help to ensure that all students have appropriate opportunities to learn. This session explores how we can model differentiation in our college classes with strategies to encourage our students to take ownership for their learning.
