“Engaging Students in Physical Geography”
Speaker: Alan Arbogast, Professor of Geography, Michigan State University
This session will demonstrate an interactive approach to teaching Physical Geography concepts. Dr. Alan Arbogast has developed an innovative approach to engage students in mastering difficult concepts using Geodiscoveries. This approach uses presentation and practice to reinforce the students’ learning.
Faculty members in various disciplines including Earth Science and Geology will benefit from Dr Arbogast’s presentation.
Biography:
Alan F. Arbogast is a Professor of Geography at Michigan State University. He obtained his PhD from the University of Kansas where he studied the geomorphology of the Great Bend Sand Prairie in the south-central part of the state. This work was supported with a NASA Global Climate Change Fellowship.
At Michigan State University, Alan teaches a variety of courses, with the majority related to physical geography and geomorphology. He bases all of his courses on sound scientific principles and teaches in a way that demonstrates relevance to everyone, including non-science majors.

"Engaging Students in Human Geography using Visuals and Local Examples"
Speaker: Alyson Greiner, Associate Professor of Geography, Oklahoma State University
This presentation will draw on many examples from the Texas and Oklahoma areas to illustrate the concepts of Human Geography. Dr. Alyson L. Greiner’s presentation will include topics such as religion and demographics. The content of Dr. Greiner’s presentation is relevant and instructive for a variety of disciplines including History, Political Science, Anthropology and Sociology.
Biography:
Alyson L. Greiner is Associate Professor of Geography at Oklahoma State University. She earned her PhD in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught courses on cultural geography, world regional geography, the history of geographic thought, and the regional geography of Europe, Africa, and the Pacific Realm. She regularly teaches undergraduate, graduate, and honors students. In 2000, she received a Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award from the National Council for Geographic Education. Her scholarly publications include Anglo-Celtic Australia: Colonial Immigration and Cultural Regionalism (with Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov) and several peer-reviewed journal articles. She is presently the editor of the Journal of Cultural Geography and a Regional Councilor for the AAG.
