"Improving Student Performance in Developmental Mathematics"
Speaker: Tom C. Carson III, Department Head, Franklin Classical School
This session will focus on techniques and activities that the presenter has found to be effective in improving student performance in developmental mathematics. These techniques include creative ways to handle student’s anxieties and math “baggage,” learning styles, a complete study system, math songs, and adding a writing component to MyMathLab assignments.
Biography:
Tom Carson’s first teaching experience was teaching guitar while an undergraduate student studying electrical engineering. That experience helped him realize his gift and passion for teaching. He went on to earn his M.A.T. in mathematics at the University of South Carolina. From 1991 to 2003, Tom taught at Midlands Technical College in the Developmental Mathematics Program, where he was honored with a NISOD Excellence in Teaching award and a Who’s Who among American Teachers award. He served on the faculty council and has been a board member of the South Carolina Association of Developmental Educators (SCADE). He has presented at conferences such as NADE and AMATYC on topics such as combating innumeracy, writing in mathematics, and implementing learning styles and study strategies in math courses. Tom is an author of several textbooks, Prealgebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, which are all published by Pearson. Currently, he teaches part time at Columbia State Community College and full time at Franklin Classical School in Franklin, Tennessee.

"Promoting Increased Student Persistence and Success: Legislative Updates"

Recent legislative mandates regarding Developmental Education programs and their delivery will have an important impact for institutions and the students they serve. This session will provide an overview of this legislation as well as a description of efforts currently underway by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) in addressing the mandates. Topics include the new Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment, non course-based options, proposed TSI rule changes, and grant opportunities. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
Biographies:
Dr. Suzanne Morales-Vale is the recently appointed Director of Developmental Education and Adult Basic Education for the P-16 Division of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. She is responsible for developing a statewide plan for developmental education, with an emphasis on improving student persistence and success as well as increasing alignment between adult basic education and post-secondary education.
Prior to joining the Coordinating Board, Dr. Morales-Vale taught over eighteen years in the areas of Developmental Writing/Reading and College Composition in both traditional and online settings at a local community college, with additional teaching experience in university, secondary, and for-profit arenas. She has held numerous leadership positions on the institutional and state levels and directed initiatives and programs in areas including faculty professional development, institutional accreditation, faculty advising, and developmental education non course-based options promoting acceleration and improved outcomes. Her academic credentials include B.A. degrees from Texas State University and California State University, Sacramento, along with a M.Ed. from Texas State University. Her academic experiences include study abroad awards in both Germany and England. She also holds a Ph.D. with specialization in Adult Education from Texas A&M University, College Station.

"Using Smart Pens in Developmental Mathematics"
Speaker: Brunilda Santiago, Instructor of Mathematics, Tarrant County College–Southeast Campus
The focus of the presentation will be to share the use of smart pens to enhance the teaching of face to face and online courses. This program will include the presentation and use of smart pens, including tracking of student usage, as well as resulting success rates in developmental mathematics courses.
Biography:
My math education started at the University of Puerto Rico with a bachelors in pure mathematics. I completed my first masters in Educational Technology at the Florida Atlantic University and a second masters in mathematics at Nova Southeastern University, both in Florida. I have had the opportunity to teach at three community colleges for the last 10 years. These community colleges are Broward Community College in Coconut Creek, FL, Indian River State College, Fort Pierce, FL and currently at Tarrant County College, Arlington, Texas.
