In 2006, the school was given a National Honor Award for Preservation by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in recognition of its work to protect the historic site. The school also organizes contemporary art exhibitions, lectures and concerts. During a typical year, more than 225,000 people attend events, view exhibits, take classes or visit the historic site. {More information...}
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, known as the "Queen of the Missions", this is the largest of the missions. Established in 1720 by the famed Father Antonio Margil de Jesús, it was almost fully restored to its original design in the 1930s by the Works Projects Administration. Spanish missions were not churches, but communities, with the church the focus. Mission San José shows the visitor how all the missions might have looked over 250 years ago. {More information...}
Tom Castanos is the education and youth initiatives coordinator at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. He has been with the park for nearly 10 years. He is also a product of the community around the missions having graduated from the public school system in the area. He has his BA in Anthropology from the University of Texas at San Antonio and also has formal education in broadcasting. Before coming to the National Park Service he spent a decade in the radio and television industry working both on air and behind the scenes. Tom's tour will help explain the role of the WPA in the reconstruction of Mission San Jose. We will discuss the historical significance as well as the economic impact of their work.

"Interdisciplinary Ways to Incorporate SAMA’s Diverse Collections in Postsecondary Education"
Speakers: Judith Ely, Docent Coordinator of Adult/Special Tours, San Antonio Museum of Art; and Katie Erickson, AT&T Director of Education, San Antonio Museum of Art
Using the San Antonio Museum of Art’s (SAMA) diverse collections as a point of departure, Katie Erickson (Director of Education) and Judith Ely (Docent Coordinator of SAMA Adult/Special Tours) will explore ways for participants to utilize museum collections as interdisciplinary teaching tools. Participants will first receive an overview of SAMA’s collections, which includes art from America, Asia, the ancient Mediterranean World, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania. Presenters will then share firsthand examples of university and college groups that have worked with SAMA to incorporate art into their curriculum, and conclude with tips that postsecondary educators can use when building partnerships for their students with museums.
