"Writing Measurable Outcome Statements for Libraries in the Context of Outcomes Assessment and Strategic Planning:
Part 1"
Speaker: Mark Hanna, Librarian, Amarillo College
This session will feature a practical and effective method to translate library goals, developed by discovery/assessment during strategic planning, into measurable outcomes-based objective statements. An effective, practical methodology is used to develop the statements by aligning them within the context of the library's mission, purpose, and environmental scanning data. Part I explains the planning model in some detail, and Part II emphasizes the methodology and gives participants practice in developing statements.
Biography:
Mark Hanna’s thirty years of library experience includes supervision and management of both technical and public service departments at public, medical and academic libraries. At Amarillo College, he continues to confront critical technological and evaluative changes as the College Librarian. Trained in librarianship at North Texas State University, he has spoken to librarians at professional conferences and workshops on various topics from using information technology to building portals and the library web. At Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) annual meetings, he has addressed methods of presenting SACS reports and publishing documents on the World Wide Web, and producing measurable outcomes statements and evaluations for SACS reviews. The latest presentation at SACS is “Writing Measurable Outcome Statements for Libraries” for a round-table discussion in December 2008.

"Virtual Reference in the Two-Year College Library: Connecting with Students Via Online Chat"
Speaker: Liz Barksdale, Director of Library Services, Western Texas College
College students may think they're experts in finding information online, but sometimes they need help! Ask Now Texas is a virtual reference library cooperative designed to assist students through online chat reference. Founded at Western Texas College in March 2007, it has since grown to include ten libraries. Eight current member libraries are located at community colleges, and the cooperative therefore has a strong focus on serving this type of learning instituion. Ask Now Texas allows member libraries to provide online assistance to students and other library users seventy-four hours during the week. The program uses free software and is staffed by volunteers who are either professional librarians or graduate students working toward a library science degree. Due to increases in distance learning course offerings and students' need for assistance at hours when their library building may not be open, this program has the potential to benefit many community college students in the future.
Biography:
Liz Barksdale has been Director of Library and Media Services at Western Texas College for three years. Director Barksdale has coordinated a virtual reference library chat program based out of WTC since March 2007. The program includes a consortia of colleges and universities throughout the north central and northeastern part of Texas, plus the South Texas College system in the Rio Grande Valley.
