The National Science Foundation grant project, eSyst, is shifting the focus of Electronics curriculum from a components approach to a systems approach. Find out the latest developments as the eSyst team unveils the first four course makeovers:  DC/AC, Sold State Devices, Digital Fundamentals, and Microprocessors. Learn the reasons why, and what other courses will be changing next. Stay up-to-date with the Electronics Education evolution. The Center has over 1150 peered reviewed resources in its collection ready for you to use in your presentations or current classroom activities. Presented by Tom McGlew, Grant Project Manager from the Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center a Member of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

"Dumbing Down Your Curriculum or Keeping Up with Technology: How to Meet Current Industry Expectations for Technicians"
Speaker: Lou Frenzel, Technology Editor, Electronic Design Magazine and Mobile Dev & Design

Many instructors feel that they are dumbing down their courses if they eliminate dated material and replace it with more up to date content needed by industry.  Just how do you know what topics are relevant and which should be retained or eliminated to prepare students for modern jobs?  This session suggests some positive things you can do to evaluate your curriculum and bring it into the 21st century without being branded as a college that continues to teach the history of electronics.  Recommendations for content in the basic courses and suggestions for new courses will be made.  The dated textbook issue and potential solutions will the discussed.

Biography:

Lou Frenzel is a Technology Editor for Electronic Design Magazine where he writes articles, columns, technology reports, and online material on the wireless, networking, and test/measurement sectors.  He is also editor of the online magazine Mobile Dev & Design that covers the cellular telephone sector.  Lou  interviews executives and engineers, attends conferences, and researches those area of electronics to determine the current state of the technology and reviews new products.  Lou has been with the magazine for 8 years.  

Formerly he was professor and department head at Austin Community College where he taught electronics for 5 years.  He still teaches at ACC as an Adjunct Professor.  Lou has 25+ years experience in the electronics industry.  He has held VP level positions with Heathkit, McGraw Hill, Longman Crown.  He was president of Technovate, a systems integrator in Florida.  He holds a bachelors of technology degree from the University of Houston and a masters degree from the University of Maryland.  He is author of 19 books on computer and electronic subjects. 

Lou has also worked with the Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center in Phoenix as a contractor for 5 years on several NSF grants and is the principal author of the Work-Ready Electronics series.  He also participates in the current MATEC Esyst project.  He lives in Austin, TX with his wife Joan.  He is a life member of IEEE.

"The Changing Face of Electronics Education (ESA & Job Ready Programs)"
Speaker: Ed Clingman, Administrator, International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians

“The Changing Face of Electronics Education” is the general topic of ISCET’s Presentation on the forces and changes in education of Electronics Technicians, the loss of the class room load in the education of electronics technicians – and moreover, what is being done to solve the problem, and put our young students back into the electronics classroom and career path. Presented by ISCET (The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians) and NCEE (National Coalition for Electronics Education). Featured are the ESA Program by ISCET and the “Job Ready” Program from NCEE. Speaks to the underlying causes and what is being done to increase enrollment and quality of the course.

Biography:

Mr. Clingman is presently serving as Administrator for the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians, having assumed this position in 2002 in addition to his duties as Accountant for the NESDA/ISCET group of companies. He served in the U.S. Army as a Unit Administrator, and as instructor in Army Administration. He was ecucated in Accounting and Business Management at Texas Christian University and in the ensuing 45 years in industry served in various executive capacities including President, CEO, VP Sales, Engineering, Production Marketing. His current duties include the day to day management of ISCET wehre he guides the programs that serve the interests of electronic technicians and their opportunities to gain an electronics education.

"Industrial Maintenance and Mechatronics"
Speaker: Joe Reid, Vice President, Amatrol

Biography:

Joe has 20+ years experience in the packaging industry (automation applications). He has been with Amatrol 12 years as a VP and he has an MBA. Joe has designed state wide industrial & e-learning systems for the state of Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Wyoming.

Joe has as well recently designed a million dollar Amatrol training center in the state of Mississippi to train a workforce for Toyota's newest US facility. Joe has worked with companies such as Caterpillar, John Deere, Gatorade and Tropicana designing their training programs.
