"Understanding Ethical Misconduct in the Current Financial Crisis and Incorporating This into Your Introduction to Business Course."
Speakers: O.C. Ferrell, Professor of Marketing, University of New Mexico; and Linda Ferrell, Associate Professor of Marketing, University of New Mexico

While most students know about the current financial meltdown, most do not have an understanding and background to understand exactly what happened.  The purpose of this session is to provide a foundational overview of the current financial crisis which has lead to a recession.

First there will be an overview of the key players including Lehman Brothers who created many of the complex financial instruments that have fueled the crisis, AIG that provided the insurance to create a false sense of confidence in the financial validity of the Lehman instruments, and finally Countrywide that created 'liar loans' and flooded the market with subprime mortgages that ultimately failed destroying many financial institutions.  The final component of the discussion will point out ethical misconduct related to fraud, excessive executive compensation, and unethical risk taking and market manipulation that caused the current financial crisis.
