Great Ideas For Teaching Students (GIFTS) Seminars

Friday, February 20, 8:00–9:15 a.m.

The Professional Development Committee has arranged for a number of the highly popular "GIFTS" sessions to be held at the TCCTA convention in Austin. These brief programs offer specific ideas for teaching and are designed to be of practical use to educators in all disciplines.

Examples of journal writing prompts that connect with specific writing assignments will be presented.

"Graphic Organizers to Promote Student Interaction: Poetry Wheel and Short Story Square"

Presenter: Susan McKnight, Tarrant County Community College - Northwest

Designed for English 1302, these are interactive exercises in which students read and respond individually to a piece of literature before class, then discuss and compare responses in class. Because each student brings one completed response, everyone has observations to share. Students learn that readers may respond to a single work of literature in multiple ways. Consequently, each may have something different to contribute to discussion. While they may not always agree on their interpretation, together students will build a body of evidence based on the text. Their small group discussion promotes understanding of the particular poem or short story, preparation for a written literary analysis, and realization that in reading literature, meaning resides in interaction between the text and an individual reader's experiences/values. Although the "poetry wheel" and "short story square" are most appropriate in English composition classes, these graphic organizers are adaptable to a wide variety of topics and disciplines.

"Heroic Quest Exercise"

Presenter: LeeAnn Olivier, Tarrant County Community College - Northwest

This interactive GIFT works well as a creative writing assignment or a narrative assignment in a composition class. It is also useful when exploring stories about heroic quests in literature.

"I Remember Now!"

Presenter: Ken Luke, Tyler Junior College

This GIFT details an assignment that allows students to demonstrate how well they have learned material and understand concepts in a 5 page paper that requires them to integrate information instead of repeating information and then forgetting it.

Don't wait another semester to learn this easy and effective way to enrich your students' learning experience!
