"Presention of Substance Abuse and Risky Behavior Among College Students"
Speaker: Kim Fromme, Professor of Psychology, University of Texas at Austin

The college years are marked by important developmental changes that have significant influences on alcohol use and other risky behaviors (e.g., drug use; risky sex). College students report heavier episodic drinking, greater increases in marijuana use, more sexual partners, and have higher morbidity and mortality rates than their same age non-college student peers.  Dr. Fromme’s presentation will describe an ongoing longitudinal study of 2,245 first time college students who were assessed annually from the summer after their last year of high school until their senior year of college. Using web-based surveys, daily monitoring, and in-person laboratory assessments, this unique research project has broadened our understanding of the many individual, social, and environmental influences on drinking and other risky behaviors from high school through college. Evidence for both selection and socialization effects, as well as the importance of parental and peer influences, provide important implications for prevention efforts. Current state-of-the art prevention programs for college students will be described, along with the ways that current findings could be used to enhance prevention efforts.

Biography:

FrommeDr. Kim Fromme received her Ph.D. from The University of Washington. Her program of research focuses on the etiology and prevention of alcohol abuse and associated negative consequences among adolescents and young adults. Earlier research by Dr. Fromme documented the fact that outcome expectancies – beliefs about the outcomes of one’s actions -- are important determinants of people’s drinking and risk-taking behavior. These research findings provided the foundation for Dr. Fromme to develop innovative brief interventions for the prevention of alcohol abuse and other risk behaviors. With support from a 5-year $3.2 grant, Dr. Fromme is currently conducting a longitudinal study of the transition from high school throughout college for the cohort of freshmen who entered UT in 2004. This research examines individual, environmental, and social factors that influence the developmental trajectories of alcohol use and other behavioral risks (e.g., sex, aggression, drug use) among students as they progress through college.
