Community College Day at the Capitol

Join us at the Texas Community College Teachers Association's 62nd Annual Convention statewide celebration of Community College Day!

Community College Day
Texas State Capitol Building
Thursday, February 19, 2009
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

It is a unique opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to speak to their representatives about the importance of community colleges in their lives and in this state.

We are hoping to have as many students and faculty as possible come to the capitol to meet with their representatives about educational issues important to them. Please keep in contact with the faculty and students on your campus to ensure their maximum participation.

TCCTA's key issues during this legislative session are developmental education, textbook selection, performance funding, and proportionality. For more information on issues important to you, your colleagues and your college, see the links in the blue box on the right.

Members of the TCCTA Legislative Committee will be available on Feb 19 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to answer questions and to distribute materials. The committee members will be in the rotunda near the portrait of Ann Richards.

Of special interest this session is a bill that has been introduced that would cut in half the current statutory requirement of American history and government courses for a baccalaureate degree in Texas. Current law requires six semester hours of each subject. HB 100, introduced by Rep. Fred Brown (R-College Station), reduces the minimum from six to three hours for government and three for history. Therefore, Government and History faculty should be encouraged to make a special effort to participate in Community College Day and to discuss this proposal with their representatives.

A bus will be traveling between the Renaissance Austin Hotel and the Capitol Building continously between the hours of 9:30am (beginning at the Renaissance) and 3:30pm (last trip back from the capitol).

We hope to see you there.
