Reading as a QEP Focus: One College’s Journey

Speakers: Kay Pulley, Director, Learning Initiative and Lola King, Professor of Developmental Reading Trinity Valley Community College

This session will examine how Trinity Valley Community College arrived at reading as a focus of their Quality Enhancement Plan and have coupled it with increased engagement. The steps of planning, development, and implementation will be discussed including the discovery of some major pitfalls. Since reading became the focal point, the impact on Developmental Reading will be presented. The challenges of creating discipline specific reading tests and gathering data on a continual basis will round out the conversation.

"Myth, Metaphor, Mindfulness, and Movement: Keys to Successful Reading Instruction"

Speaker: Tonya Strickland, Chair of the Division of Learning Support, Bainbridge College, Bainbridge, Georgia

Leonardo da Vinci said that those who have flown will forever walk with
their eyes skyward. But how do we help those students who are grounded
by reading deficiencies? This interactive session addresses how we can
effectively teach struggling readers so they can improve not only their
comprehension but also their lives.

 

Tonya Strickland

 

Biography: Dr. Tonya Strickland is Division Chair of Learning Support at Bainbridge College, a unit of the University System of Georgia. She is also an associate professor of English and reading and has worked
extensively with public school teachers through the National Writing Project and other workshops. Dr. Strickland received her doctorate from Baylor University in 1996 and has since been recognized with national,
state, and local awards for teaching.
