Friday and Saturday mornings during the TCCTA convention, the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Section will learn about "Recent Trends and Issues in Adapted Physical Activity and Teacher Preparation," in two parts.
Presenting will be Ronald French and Lisa Silliman-French, both professors in the field at Texas Womans University.
Dr. French earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in physical education with a minor in biology from Humbolt State University He then went on for Doctorate of Education in special education at the University of California-Los Angeles. He began his career as a professor at Brockport College in New York and the University of Utah.
He has spent the last 22 years at Texas Woman's University and is currently a professor in the department of kinesiology. In 2005, Dr. French was recognized by TWU with the Cornaro Award for excellence in teaching and scholarship and dedication to the University-the most prestigious award TWU bestows upon faculty. He has also been honored as the Adapted Physical Activity Council Scholar.
Dr. Silliman-French received her associate's degree at Hudson Valley Community College where she also played basketball and softball. She then completed her bachelors degree at the State University of New York College at Cortland in all-level physical education. She earned a master's degree in 1987 and her doctorate in 1993 at TWU, in the area of adapted physical education. She has taught in that field for 17 years in three different school districts in Texas and is currently an assistant professor at TWU.
Dr. Silliman-French has presented at local, state, national, and international conferences. Recently she has written chapters in two different texts: Adapted Physical Activity, Recreation, and Sport: Crossdisciplinary and Lifespan and Inclusionary Activities for Students with Disabilities. She was the recipient of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity Elly D. Friedmann Young Professional Award in 2003 and was inducted into the Columbia High School Hall of Fame in East Greenbush, New York, in 1998.
