"Spreadsheet Integration into Principles of Accounting"
Speaker: James Reeves, Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Information Management, University of Tennessee

During this presentation I will discuss how to integrate spreadsheets (Excel) into the Principles of Accounting course.   The major objectives of the presentation will be to:

a.)   Identify the rationale for introducing spreadsheets in the Principles course, rather than relying solely on a stand-alone course.  Discuss how a spreadsheet portfolio can be used to demonstrate expertise in supporting job placement.
b.)   Identify how spreadsheet integration can be accomplished without compromising the Principles content.
c.)   Illustrate the progression of spreadsheet content through the principles course.  The progression will illustrate the movement from simple navigation to more advanced spreadsheet features.
d.)   Illustrate the sequencing of spreadsheet formulas and functions through the principles course.
e.)   Specifically illustrate the following:

1. Use of spreadsheets to develop the accounting cycle during the first four chapters of the course, including using cell references across worksheets.
2. Use of the copy command using absolute cell references.
3. Use of complex arithmetic formulas for financial ratios.
4. Use of the =MIN, =IF, =VLOOKUP, =IRR, and =PV functions.

f.)    Discuss administrative issues such as grading, class time, and faculty time requirements.  Specific discussion on how Captivates and other off-line resources can minimize faculty engagement effort.

This session will illustrate specific spreadsheet applications, but assumes the audience is familiar with spreadsheet technology.  The goal of the session is to go beyond illustrating spreadsheets, toward a strategy of spreadsheet integration within the Principles course.
