This session engages the audience in “Best Practices” within our speech classes. You will hear about podcasting, blogging, Turnitin.com, and many other teaching tools. Did you know that the “Best Practice” of podcasting can increase student retention? Are you curious about utilizing Turnitin.com in your speech classes? Do you have some new unique teaching tool that you use in the classroom? Bring photocopies or CDs and be ready to take center stage and share with colleagues “Your Best Practices in Speech Classes.”
Biographies:
Alma Martinez-Egger is a full-time speech faculty member who enjoys teaching students about critical thinking in communication studies. She has been full-time with Tarrant County College Northeast campus for five years. Ms. Martinez-Egger completed her Bachelor of Science degree in communication from Texas Christian University and her Master of Science degree from the University of North Texas. Along with teaching face-to-face communication courses, she teaches hybrid and distance learning courses. Currently, Alma serves as Chair of the Senate Faculty, advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and chairs and participates in multiple committees. Her major area of research is classroom communication, specifically with emphasis in respect in the college classroom.
Walter Price has been a trainer and consultant for Harvard University School of Public Health, Dispute Resolution Service Centers, the Texas Attorney General’s Office (Texas Mediation Initiative), North Central Texas Council of Governments, Anti-Defamation League (A World of Difference Project), Dallas Independent School District (Program Development and Staff Training), Texas Education Agency (Education Service Centers – Regions 2, 7, 8, and 10), and Southwest Regional Center for Drug-Free Schools and Communities. He has completed the requirements for being a mediator (Basic, Advanced, Family, Juvenile, Gang, Victim/Offender, and School) in the state of Texas; and has also completed the requirements for being an arbitrator (Basic and Advanced Level). He has taught leadership development courses for The University of Texas at Arlington (Department of Continuing Education).
While actively involved with his company, Price Evaluation and Training (professional human resource and training company), Mr. Price is the Chairman for the Division of Business and Professor of Business and Speech at Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas. He has also taught on the faculty of Jarvis Christian College (Business, and Arts/Science Division) in Hawkins, Texas.

"Learning Objectives, Competencies, and Outcomes for the 21st Century Student"
Speaker: Cheryl M. Hamilton, Professor of Communications, Tarrant County College - Northeast Campus
Concentrating on the basic communication course, Dr. Cheryl Hamilton will demonstrate how using specific learning objectives, competencies, and outcomes can actually create excitement in a communication course as students learn what a competent communicator is, how this competency can benefit them in their everyday lives, and that they can become a competent communicator by gaining specific knowledge, behaviors, and skills through clear, attainable steps. Real examples beginning with writing the objective, incorporating text material and case scenarios, using fun classroom activities, and assessing student success will be shared.
Biography:
Cheryl Hamilton, author of a new text called Communicating for Success, has written two other texts: Communicating for Results: A Guide for Business and the Professions and Essentials of Public Speaking. She teaches a diverse student audience at Tarrant County College—NE Campus; the college includes five campuses and enrolls more than 47,000 students. In addition to her favorite courses—fundamentals, business communication, and public speaking—professor Hamilton has taught a variety of courses including honors rhetoric and Western civilization, interviewing, leadership training, anxiety reduction, intercultural communication, discussion and small group communication, voice and diction, and graduate persuasion. She has also presented workshops and given presentations on a variety of communication topics to numerous business and community groups.
Professor Hamilton received her bachelor’s degree in Speech and Drama from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois; a master’s degree in interpersonal and Small Group Communication from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and a Ph. D in Higher Education and College Teaching from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. She has presented over forty papers at professional conventions including the National Communication Association, the Southwest Educational Research Association, TCCTA, and Texas Speech Communication Association. In addition, Professor Hamilton is active in college affairs where she has served on numerous local and district committees, chaired the faculty senate, and served as president of the faculty association. And, of course, Professor Hamilton loves teaching. She has received several teaching awards, including the Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Teaching.
