"International Education and Second Life: Maximizing Resources for a Global Community"
Speaker: Lisa Volle, Professor and Online Language Program Coordinator, Central Texas College
This presentation will discuss the use of one type of virtual world as an inexpensive resource for faculty, staff and students involved in any aspect of international education: ESL, international student social networking, student guidance, recruiting, simulating study abroad, international online student exchanges and foreign language practice. The Second Life Campus of Central Texas College will be used as the backdrop to demonstrate the powerful potential virtual worlds can play in teaching and learning without borders. I will discuss island set up, basic features, multiple use spaces for faculty and staff, activities for U.S. students/International students and topics of cultural interest such as culture shock and more!
Biography:
Lisa Volle began her studies abroad her junior year and studied at the University of Barcelona, Spain. This began a long list of study, work and travel opportunities in places such as Honduras, France, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Morocco and Egypt. She obtained her MA in Foreign Languages from West Virginia University, further graduate work at Georgetown University and is ABD in Foreign Language Education. She has worked at Central Texas College for 22 years in ESL, Modern Languages and Anthropology and currently coordinates the online language program. Her research includes developing second language speaking skills and socially mediated technology in support of course content.

Lone Star College-CyFair is going to Sri Lanka. Join us as we reveal the exciting new study abroad program to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. Get a sneak peak of the exciting adventure that is in store for a class of accounting students from CyFair. From the palm tree covered beaches to the elephant inhabited jungle, this presentation will give you a firsthand look at the culture and people on the island. Learn how the students will have an impact o local business through a unique class project, and how the program will truly be a one of a kind experience.
Biography:

Shawn Miller is the Lead Faculty of Accounting and Associate Professor of Accounting at Lone Star College-CyFair. He has a Masters in Professional Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA), and a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
